Our Dentist Office in Antioch Celebrates Dental Hygiene!

Every October, we celebrate National Dental Hygiene month. This important month-long dental holiday highlights the importance oral hygiene plays in our overall well-being. It also gives us the opportunity to share tips for keeping your family’s teeth and mouth strong and healthy.

Below, our dentist office in Antioch shares more about dental hygiene month, tips for creating and keeping a dental health plan, and fun facts about our Montee Dental hygienists.


Why Celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month

Fresh breath, strong gums, and healthy teeth are important to our overall health. Without them we can’t eat our favorite foods, talk to our friends and family, or entertain in social settings.

That’s why our dentist office takes the time celebrate National Dental Hygiene month. We want you and your family to be able to enjoy all the great things in life, including a bright, white smile!

National Dental Hygiene month started in 2009 by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and Wrigley. These two companies came together to help families learn more about proper oral hygiene and oral health care. By providing resources, tips, and tricks, they’re arming families with the knowledge to take care of their teeth and smile for years to come.

Not only should our dental office celebrate National Dental Hygiene month, but you should too! How can you celebrate your dental hygiene in October? By setting and sticking to a dental routine.


Dental Routines Keep Your Teeth Healthy & Strong

Just like you have a morning routine or a workout regimen, you and your family should also have a daily dental routine. Creating and sticking to this routine will help prevent tartar buildup, cavities, and other oral health diseases.

What types of activities should be in your dental routine?

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed

  • Flossing your teeth in the morning

  • Rinsing your mouth with mouthwash in the morning

And here’s why:

Brushing Your Teeth Twice a Day

Brushing your teeth is one of the most important things you can do to keep your teeth healthy and white. The bristles from your toothbrush remove plaque, food particles, and more from your teeth.

We recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once before going to bed. You can also brush them after lunch to remove food particles, however that is completely up to you.

You can keep brushing fun for the kids by letting them choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. The more involved they are in their dental routine, they more likely they are to stick to it… even if they need some nudging from you.


Flossing in the Morning

Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth. This is because it helps removes particles, tartar, and plaque from in between your teeth. By not flossing, leftover particles build and infect your gums, which can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues.

Using Mouthwash

Mouthwash does more than give your breath minty freshness. After you’ve brushed and flossed, swishing mouthwash can help remove loose particles from your teeth and gums.

Mouthwash comes in a variety of flavors, including some made just for kids, helping you instill healthy mouthwash habits for your whole family.

Routines can take time to become habit. Don’t get discouraged if you forget to floss or rinse with mouthwash the second day, or even the third day, of your updated dental routine. Just keep pushing forward - eventually you’ll be brushing, flossing, and rinsing everyday as planned.

  • Best Dental Advice to Keep Your Mouth Clean: I always tell my patients you don't have to brush or floss all your teeth; just the ones you want to keep. :)
