Fast Smile Fixes Before Valentine’s Day

From the end of November through the beginning of January, we eat and drink more than any other time of the year. As January progresses, we remember that Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. Not only do we need to find a great gift for your valentine, we also need to get rid of the plaque and stains from food and beverages that built up over the holidays! Yellowed teeth and smelly breath are serious romance killers. Show your loved one that you care about them by having a sparkling smile and tasty fresh breath!

What Causes Bad Breath?

Plaque and halitosis are typically caused by anaerobic bacteria that live on your teeth, tongue, and gums. They don’t like oxygen, so the bubbly foam created when you brush oxygenates their hiding spots and helps kill them. However, plaque near or in your gumline and stains from coffee, tea, or wine are not as easily removed.

Get a Leg Up on Dental Stain

The best way to improve your oral health is by practicing regular hygiene: brushing and flossing twice a day, every day and having your teeth cleaned semi-annually. But you might not have time to make your appointment with Montee & Montee Dental before February 14th. That’s okay- there are other things you can do at home to briefly freshen your smile and your breath until you can get in to see us (especially if you’re a heavy coffee or tea drinker.)

Baking Soda: Make a loose paste with a teaspoon of baking soda and your toothpaste. Use your toothbrush to apply it to your teeth. Rinse with water after 60 seconds, then brush your teeth as normal. Don’t do this more than once or twice, as the abrasives from the soda can permanently damage your tooth enamel and cause gum recession.

Peroxide Rinse: Mix equal amounts of tap water and hydrogen peroxide. Swish the mixture around your mouth, but DO NOT SWALLOW. Brush as normal afterwards. Don’t use this more than once or twice, as it can alter the natural flora inside of your mouth, making staining even worse.

Chew a Xylitol-Sweetened Gum: Xylitol helps freshen your breath by reducing acidic bacterial levels inside of your mouth between brushing and flossing. Opt for an Over the Counter Whitening Pen: Even though store bought whiteners don’t work as well, you can use them to attack specific spots on your teeth that may be discolored. For better results, get a custom take-home tray and prescription strength gel.
