Braces vs Invisalign: Straight to the point

Braces vs Invisalign Green Hills Dentist Have you been considering braces or Invisalign to straighten your teeth or your child’s teeth?  You probably have a lot of questions. Which is more affordable and fits in your budget? Which one is more effective?  Making this decision will ultimately come down to which treatment will get the job done, with a less likely chance of having to fix your teeth again in the future. Drs. Stan & Carol Montee and the wonderful staff of Montee & Montee Dental Co. in Green Hills, Tennessee want to help outline both braces & Invisalign to help you better understand each option.

Although braces and Invisalign are designed to help straighten teeth, more people are familiar with wire braces. Invisalign was first used in the year 2000 as a new orthodontic treatment, while braces have been used for centuries.

Braces consist of metal brackets glued to your teeth that are connected by wires and tiny rubber bands.  As orthodontic health care has advanced, you can now get brackets that more closely match your enamel color.  Unlike adults, most kids who get braces opt to make a fashion statement with their braces by getting the tiny rubber bands in different colors.

Invisalign is designed to be just what is hinted in the name: invisible. They are aligner trays made of smooth, comfortable, and BPA-free clear plastic that is worn over your teeth to make gentle and subtle changes to move your teeth.  Your orthodontic specialist will use x-rays, pictures, and impressions to create a 3-D image of your teeth so that your aligner trays can be configured accordingly.

Let’s get down to the point in looking at how braces stack up against Invisalign.  As we stated previously, they are both designed to help straighten your teeth, but they both have pros and cons.

Now that we’ve gotten straight to the point about braces vs Invisalign, it’s important to understand which treatment will be recommended for you. Ultimately, the appropriate treatment will be based on your overall dental health. Braces are more ideal for a patient who has complex dental issues, such as severe overbite, underbite or incorrect jaw position, whereas Invisalign helps to adjust minor spacing and crowding issues for a straighter smile.
